Saimaa and Puula are large lakes in Mikkeli. Besides them there are about 700 lakes and ponds in the area. We can also be proud of the cleanliness and freshness of watercourses. Besides the lakes, conifer forests dominate the landscape. The most usual tree species are pine, fir and birch.
The landscape is quite hilly. The highest peaks are Ollanmäki and Neitvuori (185 meters from the sea level). There are many signs of the Ice Age. For example in the city centre area lie two beautiful ridges called Kaihunharju and Kalevankangas.
In Mikkeli you can enjoy of the four beautiful seasons, with a real winter between autumn and spring. The mean temperature of the year is 3-4oc. In July the mean temperature is 17oc and in February -9oc.
