Mikkeli Art Museum was opened in 1970 as the Johannes Haapasalo Museum. The name was changed to Mikkeli Art Museum in 1976, following the donation of the Martti Airio collection. The art museum was named the South Savo Regional Art Museum in 1981.
The art museum is situated in the city centre opposite the cathedral. The building, known as the 'Granite House', was designed by the architect Armas Rankka and dates from 1912.
Mikkeli Art Museum provides a wide range of services connected with the visual arts in South Savo. It researches, documents and displays, e.g. art from the region. One important area is the exhibition and collection of Finnish graphic art. In addition to organizing exhibitions, it is the task of the art museum to look after and add to the art collections in its possession. The Martti Airio collection, which is on permanent display, comprises Finnish paintings from the 1870s to the 1980s, furniture, oriental carpets and small art objects. Most of the works are post-Impressionist and Expressionist. Sculptures from the collection of the sculptor Johannes Haapasalo are also on permanent display. The works in the city's art collection have been placed in the city offices.
